Andrew Secures Over $9 Million for Local Airport Infrastructure & Safety

Andrew secured more than $9 million in federal funding for critical infrastructure upgrades at Long Island MacArthur Airport and Republic Airport. These investments, awarded through the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration, will support long-term safety, security, and operational improvements at two key regional airports.

At Long Island MacArthur Airport, $3 million will go toward replacing and upgrading fencing and security cameras to enhance perimeter safety. At Republic Airport, over $6.5 million will fund the final phase of two major projects, including reconstructing an aging airfield gate and rehabilitating more than 5,000 feet of paved runway to extend its service life. Andrew remains committed to securing federal resources that strengthen transportation infrastructure, improve safety, and support economic growth across Long Island.

Long Island MacArthur Airport plans $3 million in security upgrades

"

Islip’s Long Island MacArthur Airport is slated to receive $3 million worth of security upgrades within the next eight months, according to town Aviation Commissioner Rob Schneider. Islip Town announced Wednesday that it was awarded a federal grant to cover the cost of the upgrades. They will include roughly 7 miles of improved fencing around the airport, and new security cameras around the perimeter. Town Councilman John Lorenzo, the district representative for the airport, told Newsday the project, which has been in the works for about five years, is needed to 'keep our airfields safe and secure for the future.' The U.S. Department of Transportation funding will be used to replace the airport’s existing 6-foot fence with a new 8-foot fence topped with barbed wire, according to Schneider, who said the grant also will fund a 'state of the art' security camera system along the airport’s boundaries. 'This is a hardening of the system,' Schneider said...Schneider added that the construction will not interfere with flights or any other airport operations. Newsday has reported the number of passengers traveling through MacArthur last year reached nearly 1.4 million, up from around 1.2 million the previous year. In a news release Wednesday, Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter thanked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) for helping facilitate the grant.

WHAT'S NEW IN NY-02

Supporting the Next Generation of Law Enforcement

This week, students from across the community completed the Suffolk County Police Department’s High School Youth Academy. Participants took part in physical training, explored various units within the department, and learned what it takes to keep their communities safe. The program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. When a constituent nearly missed out due to a delayed school response, Andrew’s office stepped in and secured her spot in the program. In recognition of their achievement, Andrew provided Congressional certificates to all students who completed the academy.

Ribbon Cutting Held for People’s Arc Nature Community Center in Sayville

A ribbon cutting was held this week for the People’s Arc Nature Community Center in Sayville, located in the shared space of St. Ann’s Episcopal Church. The center reflects a strong commitment to inclusion, community, and connection, offering a space where individuals of all abilities can explore nature, participate in meaningful experiences, and grow together. Andrew applauds this effort to create a more inclusive and supportive community on Long Island.

CASEWORK HIGHLIGHT: Assisting Veteran with Military Records and Service Medals

A local veteran contacted Andrew's office for help obtaining a corrected DD215 form and long-delayed service medals. Andrew's casework team initiated a congressional inquiry with the Department of the Navy and stayed engaged with Navy officials until a resolution was reached. As a result of this outreach, the Navy issued the corrected paperwork and confirmed shipment of the veteran’s medals, including those recognizing marksmanship, Cold War service, and Vietnam-era deployment. Andrew was proud to assist and ensure this veteran received the recognition he earned.

Andrew knows how frustrating dealing with bureaucracy can be. That is why he has an entire team dedicated to helping constituents get what they need from the government. If you need help dealing with a federal agency, contact our office and our team will get to work on your case.

KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS

Andrew Helps Introduce Legislation to Strengthen the Abraham Accords and Counter Iran

Andrew helped introduce the Abraham Accords Defense Against Terror Act, legislation that strengthens U.S. partnerships with countries that have normalized relations with Israel and are working to counter Iran and its terrorist proxies. The bill streamlines arms sales to Abraham Accords partners by granting them the same expedited process as NATO allies. This effort not only reinforces Israel’s security and encourages further regional cooperation, but also strengthens U.S. national security by deepening coordination with reliable partners in a strategically vital region. Andrew stands with our friend Israel and is committed to advancing peace through strength, supporting our allies, and protecting America’s national security interests in the Middle East.
