Listen, I’m going to be honest, my team had an email planned for today talking about the flood and providing a reminder of resources available for our communities and families that are in the thick of needing relief.
Instead, I’m about to hit you with partisan, insider baseball, nonsense that is being hidden behind the GOP’s special session plans and actions around flood relief. Buckle up, I’m furious, and you will be too:
FIRST: Greg Abbott has called for a special session to push his radical agenda.
This wasn’t a surprise. Texans are facing real crises — from rising costs to broken infrastructure — and instead of addressing them, Abbott has a history of using his veto power to manipulate legislative actions to serve his and Donald Trump’s agenda.
But the plot thickens fast. Behind the banner of flood relief as the focus of this special session lies a coordinated power grab. Donald Trump and Greg Abbott are looking to rig Texas’s congressional map ahead of 2026.
It is important to note that the Governor already has the full authority to grant flood relief within his emergency powers. A special session isn’t needed. I want to be clear that flood victims’ relief could be delayed over Abbott’s political gamesmanship.
It’s also important to note that it is the Texas taxpayer fronting the bill. Texas leadership should be laser-focused on flood relief and prevention. Any attempts to pull attention away from these relief efforts are a gross injustice to all of the Texans affected by this natural disaster.
We cannot undo the damage Republicans continue to allow through their gamesmanship — but we can show up for one another now, and we can fight for a government that won’t abandon its people.
I assure you that Texas Democrats are ready to take this fight to every corner of the state — in the courts, in the Capitol, and in every district they’ve tried to silence. This special session is just the beginning of a long battle for fairness, transparency, and the future of our state.
Like I said at the top of this message, I wanted to connect with you about relief efforts. I still included those below for whoever needs them…
However, Abbott’s actions this week have increased the urgency in us building the resources to push back on this power grab and weaken their ability to pull a fast one on voters while they are rightly distracted. If you are able, please consider making a contribution to power our fight. I know things are still rough right now, so please, only chip in today if you have the resources.
In solidarity,
Kendall
