Dear John,
This is a major win for gun violence prevention in North Carolina: Governor Josh Stein has vetoed House Bill 1931, a dangerous bill that would have allowed teachers and volunteers to carry firearms in private schools with minimal training and oversight!
This bill was reckless and deadly. It would have allowed people to carry guns on private school grounds with only 8 hours of training per year, a concealed carry permit, and written permission from a school leader. Even if voluntary, no educator should ever be expected to act as an armed responder.
Thanks to voices like yours, and outreach from advocates, educators, and public safety experts, Governor Stein took a stand to protect our communities.
But this fight is far from over.
The bill has been scheduled for a House veto override vote on July 29th—and the gun lobby is already working to flip the few votes they need to make that happen. We must be ready.
