Houston DSA

Newsletter for July 9th, 2025

Howdy Comrades!

A warm welcome to the 80 socialists who turned out to our new member orientation last week! We have a lot of updates since our last newsletter, so let's get right down to it.

Congratulations to DSA member Zohran Mamdani on his win in NYC!

This is a win not just for DSA and for working-class New Yorkers, but for the wider socialist movement. It's a clear rebuke to the hegemonic "common sense" espoused by capitalist media and the ruling class: that change can only come with their approval, and that socialism is a dirty word, too radical for everyday people. Read the statement by DSA's National Political Committee, and join us today in the fight to elect working-class candidates like Zohran all over Houston!

July 10th- Chapter General Meeting

Houston DSA’s monthly general meetings are where the membership comes together to be in community and discuss the activities going on within our own chapter and the national organization. It is also where we conduct chapter business like elections, votes, or resolutions (and we do have a bylaw amendment vote this month!).  If you prefer to join us online, follow the instructions after RSVPing for Zoom registration.

General meetings are open to non-members and a great way to learn about the work we are doing — however, participation in certain activities like elections and votes is reserved for Houston DSA members only (via email ballot). You can visit dsausa.org/join to become a member today.

We're going to be collecting donations for the victims of the flooding in Central Texas at our monthly general meeting this Thursday. See this post for more details.

July 13th: Socialism 101

Later in the month, you can attend our next Socialism 101 event to learn the basics of socialism, how it applies to the world, and how we use those principles to fight for the working class. This is a great event for new or interested members. If you know nothing about socialism, we’ll give you the basics to be able to engage in political discussion with other members and about DSA work; if you are familiar with socialism, come participate to help others learn and expand your own understanding as well!

Eco-Socialism News - METROS 2026 Budget Cuts

As rent, cars, and insurance become increasingly more expensive, Houston deserves an affordable and reliable transit system that connects our communities.

METRO has just started planning their 2026 budget. Last year’s budget saw cuts to transformative METRONext plans, which Harris County voters approved by two-thirds majority, and a significant increase to the METRO Police funding instead.

With the Our Vote, Our METRO Campaign, Houston DSA aims to pressure METRO’s board of directors to build the transit we voted for. Several members of our Eco-Socialism Working Group spoke at the METRO board meeting on June 26th.  he topics of transit over-policing and the myriad of accessibility and reliability issues that Houstonians face. We also attended the Houston Streets Advocacy Summit hosted by Stop TxDOT, which included representatives from a number of different advocacy groups around town.

Immigrant Justice News - Las Esquinas & July 04 Canvass!

On June 22nd, organizers with our Immigrant Justice campaign hosted their first "Las Esquinas" event with Houston immigrant resource center CRECEN. Comrades met at 6:45am to talk to workers at different locations around town, hand out pan dulce, water and distribute know-your-rights information. You can see an interview with two of our organizers on Radio Jornalera Crecen here: https://www.youtube.com/live/02Iwm-XrhyQ?si=zF442vccrDbw2FPl

Our Immigrant Justice Campaign hosted an additional canvass on the 4th of July at the Lindale Park July 4th parade last week. Where twenty comrades came out to canvas; collecting almost 200 signatures that day for our petition. County Commissioner Adrian Garcia was in attendance of the parade, seizing the opportunity one canvasser challenged him to show meaningful support to the petition -- he signed on the spot.

Labor News

We need to empower a new wave of labor militancy at the same time as we win victories at the ballot box. On July 15th Houston DSA's Labor working group continues our reading of We Are The Union, veteran organizer Eric Blanc's new book where he lays out a plan to scale up union membership by concertedly inspiring and training scores of rank-and-file leaders through worker-to-worker organizing. Join us in person or online, and see Blanc's piece in Jacobin last year for more information on this organizing strategy.
