The senseless Medicaid cuts — $930 billion slashed — could force as many as 144 rural hospitals across the US to close their labor and delivery units. This will have catastrophic consequences for mothers and infants. Where will these women go to deliver their babies?
According to Mother Jones, “The cutbacks and closures won’t just affect patients; they will also have a profoundly destructive impact on rural jobs and economies, where hospitals typically serve as one of the biggest employers in their communities. According to the National Partnership analysis, more than 80 percent of people working in hospitals in non-metro areas are women.”
This is a direct attack on America’s women and children. We are sick and tired of men making decisions about women, our bodies, and our well-being. We desperately need more women in the rooms where these decisions are being made. In addition to those attacks, the cuts to Medicaid will also affect Planned Parenthood – in what Planned Parenthood’s team is calling an “attempt to end abortion in the United States.”
Without revenue from patients on Medicaid, Planned Parenthood facilities across the country will have to close. According to PP, almost 200 clinics across 24 states will be at risk, with over 90% of those closures in states where abortion is legal.
That’s not all: This news comes just a week after the Supreme Court decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, which ruled that states are allowed to block Medicaid funding for Planned Parenthood and individuals are unable to sue over being denied coverage from PP or similar providers. These recent developments could destroy women’s healthcare as we know it and put other freedoms at risk.
