Step 3: Tax and spend like crazy! Bilk the taxpayers to fund whims and fancies
for you and your friends. If you run low on funds, borrow more. If you can’t
borrow, then print more. Ignore any warnings.

Step 4: Suppress free speech. Once your country starts having problems, people
might call out your glorious revolution in the public square, and we can’t have
that. Muzzle dissent quickly.

Step 5: Eliminate civil society. NGOs, watchdog groups, and independent media
just get in the government’s way; for the people’s own protection, they all
need to go.

Step 6: Blame capitalism and freedom when it all collapses!

While I’m just kidding, the sad truth is that many people around the world
have watched this happen to their own country. From Venezuela to Iran to China,
people are living under the weight of authoritarian and socialist governments.
