Ten million gallons of beer are at risk nationally. How are local distributors impacted?

Due to the pandemic, two local New York state beer distributors sent nearly 1,000 kegs back to their suppliers to be discarded. Now they are faced with a tough decision when ordering more kegs that could lead to more expired beer due to continued uncertainty around COVID-19. NBWA Chief Economist Lester Jones explained, “Brewers, distributors and retailers are really good at moving beer in one direction. What happens now is we have to reverse that flow, and logistically that’s really complicated and it’s really expensive.”

You know we love a fun beer label, and Erik Leach, the brand marketing coordinator at New Realm Brewing, is receiving recognition for one of his beer can designs. The label for Tyrannosaurus Flex, a hazy double IPA released last October, got the people’s choice award for the best 16 oz. can label in the country from the Craft Beer Marketing Awards, called “The Crushies.” Check it out here.

Customers want comfort

According to Progressive Grocer, consumers turned to such comforts as ice cream, alcoholic beverages and cigars to get through the first phases of the pandemic this spring, and maybe all the stress associated with loss of income and having to stay at home. But looking ahead to the second half of 2020, it could bring a renewed consumer focus on value and more desire for away-from-home retail trips and similar experiences.
