Dear friend,
In the excitement of travel plans and barbecues, the meaning of Independence Day can sometimes take a backseat to the red, white, and blue festivities themselves. Yet as I look around, I see that the call for a civics renaissance has never been louder—the rallying cry for civic renewal is echoing across the nation. I wanted to share a few examples with you.
The Wall Street Journal featured a piece on the Fourth of July reminding readers that “
the nation’s 250th anniversary is a chance to relearn our founding principles.” The piece highlights the incredible work of Allen Guelzo, a Jack Miller Center Academic Advisory Council member. It encourages Americans to rally around the importance of our founding documents and calls for a serious historical examination of our past.
Forbes also highlighted the rising
importance of civic education as America approaches its semiquincentennial. The article directly cites the work of the Jack Miller Center and features several civic education initiatives– including our partners at iCivics, the National Constitution Center, and the Beacon Project. It reminds us that political division on these issues is not as stark as it may seem, and that a civic education renaissance is well underway.
Finally, our friends at the
Washington Examiner took note of the leadership the Jack Miller Center has shown in this space, highlighting our
Annual Report and celebrating our success as one of many “encouraging signs” that “point toward genuine civic renewal.”
Our progress, however, extends far beyond the page. Leading up to July 4th, the Jack Miller Center organized a highly successful
2025 American Civic Tradition Fellowship. K–12 teachers from across the country gathered for in-depth discussions of primary texts, support in developing lesson plans, and exploration of classroom-ready curricular materials.
As we conclude America’s 249th anniversary and prepare for the 250th, I’m proud to share the great work being done. But this is not the time to rest. Constitution Day is fast approaching, and we must rally around each civic milestone with the same energy we bring to Independence Day. Every day, more young Americans are discovering the importance of civic education. This renaissance would not be possible without your support.
Sincerely,
