From my position on the Senate Education & Health and Privileges & Elections Committees, I can help stymie Trump and Youngkin’s anti-academic freedom agenda by opposing every move they make. I already joined my Democratic colleagues in voting against the confirmation of eight of Governor Youngkin’s most extreme appointees to the Boards of Visitors at George Mason University, University of Virginia, and the Virginia Military Institute. I then joined them in a lawsuit to assert checks and balances in our government and legally bar the rejected board appointees from continuing to serve. Unlike my Republican counterparts in Congress, I won’t abdicate my legislative duties and I won’t bow down to arbitrary and autocratic behavior. I will do everything I can to ensure Virginia remains a place for educational excellence.
But pushing back against Youngkin and his ally Trump makes me a political target, which in turn means my next run for office will be more expensive.
