Dear John,
Each year, July 4th is marked as a celebration of freedom. But this weekend, as families gathered for barbecues and fireworks, freedom was nowhere to be found in communities ravaged by gun violence.
In Chicago alone, 55 people were shot over the holiday weekend. Eight of them died. There were no breaking news banners. No national outcry. Just sirens in the distance, and blood washed from the pavement before dawn.
This is what our country has come to accept — a status quo where mass shootings, daily gunfire, and community trauma are treated as inevitable. A nation where elected officials offer thoughts and prayers, but refuse to take action. A nation that calls this “freedom.”
At March For Our Lives, we know this pain all too well. We are led by survivors and young people who have lost classmates, siblings, and friends to gun violence — and who refuse to let this crisis continue unchecked.
We will not accept a future where safety depends on your zip code. We will not accept performative grief from politicians who do nothing to stop the next tragedy. We will not accept a version of “freedom” that leaves families forever broken.
If you agree, please make a donation of $20.25 today. Your support powers our work to hold the gun lobby accountable, to change the laws that enable this violence, and to build a movement rooted in justice and action.
Gun violence is now the leading cause of death for young people in the United States. We are doing everything we can to change that — but we cannot do it alone.
With urgency and resolve,
Team March For Our Lives
