New California law: mail-in ballots sent to every registered voter, can be counted for 17 days after the election.

"California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill Thursday requiring that a mail-in ballot be sent to every registered voter in the state for the presidential election in November. Newsom in May ordered that county elections officials send every voter a mail-in ballot for the November election, citing the health threats of voting in person during the coronavirus pandemic, but that order was met with legal challenges from the California Republican Party and others." It's what vote security experts recommend you don't do.

But now it's California law anyway.

California will send a mail-in ballot to every registered voter for the November 2020 election. But as experts at the Heritage Foundation have noted, automatically sending ballots out to all registered voters "is an open invitation to fraud and abuse." You can check out their report on election security using vote-by-mail here.

And there's one other change in the bill text, as National Review reported: "The bill also extends the window for mail ballots arriving after Election Day to be counted from three days after the election to 17 days, a change that Republican National Committee member Harmeet Dhillon criticized as 'bizarre.'"

Trouble for Biden? Democrats are worried about party unity heading into November.

"Democrats are worried their party unity is fraying five months out from the presidential election as several contested primaries pitting progressives against mainstream Democrats go down to the wire." (The Hill)

Some Democratic strategists are openly complaining about Bernie Sanders and his negative effect on party unity -- which also means generating support and enthusiasm for Joe Biden -- headed into November.

As The Hill reported, the two key points of complaint are:

  • not doing a fundraising event with Biden, although other former opponents like Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris have

  • endorsements of primary candidates running against "establishment" picks, including a senior House member (see the story below)

Under-reported story: what's at stake for Democrats in primaries this Tuesday. (Spoiler: a lot!)

"Taken together, the recent surge in the polls for progressives, at a time of nationwide protests against racial injustice and police brutality, raises the possibility that Tuesday could be one of their best chances of the 2020 election cycle to demonstrate their emerging influence in the Democratic Party." (The Hill)

The mainstream media isn't talking about this, but a showdown is looming between the progressive and "establishment" wings of the Democratic Party -- and it'll be decided on Tuesday night.

In New York -- It's the establishment vs. the progressives in the primary for Rep. Eliot Engel's seat. Engel is chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and he's been in Congress since 1989. But opponent Jamaal Bowman wants to change that.

Engel has endorsements from Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer, while Bowman received endorsements from Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), and even the New York Times.

In Kentucky -- State Rep. Charles Booker has a "strong chance" of beating Amy McGrath in the Democratic primary. McGrath has spent more than $20 million in the race, and she earned the endorsement of Elizabeth Warren last summer.

But just this month, Warren swapped her endorsement from McGrath to Booker, as Booker also picked up endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), as the Washington Free Beacon reported.

In both states, it's the Establishment vs. the Progressives ... and the outcome of these primaries could determine the direction of the Democratic Party.

There's never been an election like this one.

"Jupiter resident Carlos Gavidia, a key organizer of Saturday’s boat parade, hoped that more than 1,000 watercraft would participate. Two helicopters hovering above will provide an accurate count later, he said. Gavidia organized the original 'Trumptilla' boat parade in early May, drawing 1,538 watercraft along the Intracoastal Waterway from Jupiter to Mar-a-Lago." (Click Orlando)

We don't think there's ever before been a presidential election that's had repeated, nationwide boat parades (but if we're wrong, let us know!). That's why the Trump boat parades -- including the story above which highlights one in Florida -- are so interesting.
