“For those people that want to protest, they’re going to be met with very big force… but you know, this is people that hate our country.” — Donald Trump
Folks,
The right to protest is a fundamental freedom protected by the First Amendment. But according to the President of the United States, people who protest his agenda “hate our country,” and must be met with “very heavy force.”
His comments are vile, folks, but not surprising.
This isn’t the first time Donald Trump has used authoritarian rhetoric to demonize protestors and threaten them with violence. And it certainly won’t be the last. In 2020, he was considering whether or not military officials should shoot protesters who took to the streets after a white police officer murdered George Floyd, a Black man.
Time and time again, Americans have taken to the streets out of love for our country to sound the alarm against anti-democracy legislation, call out and challenge gerrymandered maps, and speak up for fair representation. We engage in a deeply patriotic form of protest because we believe in a version of America where elections are free and fair — and where our democracy is truly representative.
It’s unfortunate, but we are not surprised that Trump has resorted to threatening protestors with violence. He knows that his agenda is extremely unpopular, and he’s willing to do and say anything to get his way. We must stay the course to hold Trump and other anti-democracy extremists to account and make sure they can’t silence the growing movement speaking out.
