The current bill makes the majority of those cuts permanent, but also adds some new temporary provisions, including increasing the cap on state and local tax deductions to $40,000 for households earning $500,000 or less for the next five years, after which it will default back to the $10,000 cap first initiated in the 2017 Trump-backed bill. Matt Cohen, president and CEO of the Long Island Association, a nonpartisan business group, lauded Garbarino and LaLota for their work negotiating an increase amid opposition from red-state Republicans, but said the group is still examining the long-term impacts the overall bill will have on Long Island. 'The reinstatement of SALT has been the holy grail for Long Islanders and kudos to Congressmen Garbarino and LaLota for delivering significant changes to it which will impact many more taxpayers, jolt our economy, and make our region more affordable,' Cohen said in an email to Newsday. KEEPING UP WITH CONGRESS House Passes Major Tax Relief and Border Security Package This week, the House passed the Senate Amendment to H.R. 1, One Big Beautiful Bill Act, by a vote of 218 to 214, advancing the legislation to the President’s desk for his signature. The legislation includes a significant increase in the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap from $10,000 to $40,000 thanks to Andrew's commitment to securing a deal that delivers on his promise to provide meaningful SALT relief for NY-02. The bill also makes landmark investments in border security, public safety, and national defense at a time of escalating threats from hostile nation states, transnational criminal groups, and terrorist actors targeting the United States. It holds the line against higher taxes for working families by permanently locking in the 2017 tax cuts, delivers on promises to address taxes on tips, overtime pay, and car loan interest, lifts up small businesses, and strengthens SNAP and Medicaid to ensure these programs remain sustainable for generations to come and focused on serving the vulnerable populations they were designed to help.
