As one of the first Native American women elected to
Congress, I
know firsthand that struggle makes us fierce.
That’s why I want to tell you a bit about my friend Peggy today.
Peggy knows what’s at stake in this era. She was raised by a single mom
who relied on Medicaid and SNAP to make ends meet. She put herself through
college by hard work and student loans. And as an organizer and elected
official, she’s fought to build an economy that works for all of us.
Peggy also has a chance to make history. She will be the first Native
American woman to serve in the US Senate. Believe me, it’s long overdue.

It’s time to ensure that all communities — including the Indigenous
communities across this country — are truly represented in the Senate.
Peggy’s Anishinaabe name, Gizhiiwewidamookwe, means ‘speaks in a loud and
clear voice woman.’ I know she’ll use that voice to fight tooth and nail
for Minnesotans.
