Friend,
Free Press believes Independence Day is a chance for all of us to defend and reclaim free speech against the constant assault from this authoritarian White House and the billionaires who control media and tech.
Will you add your name and your voice to our cause today?
“I pledge to expose attacks on free expression and basic rights from those in power. I pledge to defend our freedom to think, speak, connect and access information without fear of retaliation. For the sake of our democracy, I will challenge authoritarian tactics designed to silence dissent and stand in solidarity with communities under attack.”

Friend,
Today is meant to mark our Independence Day, when the United States rejected tyranny and sought to establish a democratic experiment of, by and for the people. Yet from the very beginning, white supremacy pervaded our society, with the Founding Fathers embracing slavery — and the Constitution enshrining it. The tireless struggle for justice has carved a path forward against all odds, pushing ever forward, even as hateful forces and demagogues have risen in power and numbers. Let that be a reminder that this nation is a work in progress — one that we have the power to shape.
Even now, as Donald Trump and his band of billionaires and bigots are waging wars at home and abroad, on sidewalks and in courtrooms, we’re inspired by the actions of people like you — activists who are fighting dehumanizing ICE raids and forced disappearances, protesters organizing to protect vulnerable communities, journalists taking on Trump’s lies and everyone taking to the streets as the president deploys U.S. troops against civilians.
Millions of people are courageously speaking out against the rise of authoritarianism in the United States, even under threat of detention or deportation. Those are our beacons of light in these dark times.
Trump and his followers cloak their hate in the colors of our flag and the language of freedom, treating dissenting groups as violent or un-American. That is an intentional distortion of the principles of our democracy — and a distraction from the administration’s efforts to undermine our collective freedom and humanity. In fact, there is nothing more patriotic than a willingness to say that our country can and must be better.
Leaders of the MAGA movement claim to be the sole defenders of liberty, but their devotion to white supremacy makes it clear that they will trample over the fundamental rights of many to cement power and status for the few. That is not freedom. State-sanctioned violence and discrimination are not freedom.
On this Fourth of July, halfway through the first year of the second Trump administration, freedom is under grave threat — and has already been taken from so many. But the authoritarians haven’t won yet. Many of us are still privileged enough to have our freedom of speech, even if we might face unlawful retaliation for exercising this right.
Every person we add to our coalition makes it safer for the next. Your courage paves the way for more and more members of the public to join with us. Together, we can overcome the Trump regime’s intimidation tactics.
Please join us in pledging to defend free speech and stand in solidarity with everyone under threat from this corrupt regime.
