Saturday Morning Covfefe: 5 Things With Olivia

Whether you’re catching this over cold brew or curled up with some cafecito, I’ve pulled together five headlines you may have missed, and one story that might just lift your spirit.

1. The Thing That Made Me Spit Out My Coffee

Justice Sonia Sotomayor: “The administration has the Supreme Court on speed dial.” In a 6-3 ruling, the Court allowed Trump’s team to deport eight men to South Sudan, despite threats of torture and violence. And they did it on the shadow docket. Justice Sotomayor called it out in a scathing dissent: “Other litigants must follow the rules, but the administration has the Supreme Court on speed dial.” So much for checks and balances. The separation of powers doesn’t mean much when one branch is this willing to play foot soldier for another.

2. Under the Radar, Not Unimportant

AI fact-checked Trump, and the results were brutal. Five major AI models were given 20 of Trump’s go-to talking points. Fifteen were flat-out false. The rest? Distorted or lacking evidence. Let’s just say: truth is not his strong suit, even machines agree. Bring this one up with family and friends this weekend. Tired of being the designated fact-checker for that friend that has gone down the rabbit hole? Just tell them: "Hey, did you hear what the machines found?"

3. Signed, Sealed, Dangerous

The “Big Beautiful Bill” is a quiet disaster in disguise. Trump’s July 4th mega-bill is filled with shiny distractions and quiet devastation. From gutting Medicaid to bloating the border budget, it's a Frankenstein policy that even conservative thinkers are criticizing. But it passed, because fear still rules the Republican Party.

4. The Scenario That Gave Me Heart Palpitations

The Washington Post dropped a nuclear strike simulation that has me checking Zillow listings outside the D.C. blast radius. This simulation is not fiction. It’s a minute-by-minute breakdown of what would happen in the event of a nuclear strike on Washington. From satellite detection to presidential response time, it’s haunting, and a chilling reminder that leadership in moments like this actually matters.

5. Swamp Cage for Moms, Kids & Elders

New Florida documents reveal vulnerable migrants could be shipped to the Everglades detention camp. Internal state planning papers show officials anticipate detaining women, children, and even seniors at the sweltering, hurricane‑prone "Alligator Alcatraz." Engineers warn the prefab cages could buckle in even a Category 2 storm, on swamp land already plagued by flooding, mosquitoes, and mounting legal blowback. Keep this on your radar. It’s the human cost of mass‑deportation policy in real time. Caging kids on flood-prone swamp land, in hurricane season, isn’t just cruel, it’s a grotesque reflection to the world of what this country is becoming under Stephen Miller’s vision.

🌻One Thing for Your Soul

The Final Finishers Will Break and Build Your Heart. Premiering at Tribeca, Final Finishers follows the NYC Marathon’s last-to-finish runners. One of them, Michael Ring, was partially paralyzed two years ago. He finished the race anyway. Long after the cameras stopped rolling. Long after most had gone home. Because grit isn’t loud, it’s relentless. As someone who’s run only one marathon, and brought up the rear, this hit home in a way I didn’t expect.

📎 The Guardian feature

(Yes that’s me running the El Paso, Texas marathon…shoutout to the Army paramedic who said “you’ve got this,” and ran the last mile by my side.)

Watch the “Final Finishers” trailer. Then text someone you admire, just for showing up. That quiet endurance? It’s everything.

See you soon,

Olivia
