Dear Friend,

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, we reflect on what it means to be an American. We value freedom, fairness, and standing up for each other, especially in times of need. But this year, those values are under attack.

America's birthday should be a time to unite around our shared values, not score political points. Sadly, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have decided that this day is about enshrining Trump's agenda into law, hurting millions of American families, seniors, and veterans.

Yesterday, Republicans in Congress passed Trump's Big Ugly Bill, which is the largest cuts to healthcare and food assistance in American History. I voted an emphatic 'NO'.

Today, President Trump will be signing the catastrophic legislation into law.

This heartless piece of legislation will cut healthcare for 17 million Americans and put food benefits at risk for 42 million Americans.

The Republican Big Ugly Bill is a betrayal of our most fundamental values: freedom, compassion, and basic human decency.

Because of Republicans, seniors will face $535 billion in Medicare cuts, making it harder to see a doctor. It will scrap clean energy investments, causing jobs to vanish and utility bills to rise. And it allows states to lock kids out of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for 90 days, leaving our children uninsured.

This bill still adds $3.4 trillion to the deficit, in order to give tax breaks to billionaires, leaving a debt that will take generations to pay off.

I've always believed that you don't kick people when they're down. But that's exactly what this bill does. It punishes working families, veterans, and seniors, while handing billions in tax breaks to the wealthy.

Not only does this bill harm seniors and working families, but it targets those who served our country in uniform. On the Fourth of July, we should honor our servicemembers and veterans by celebrating their service, not taking away the benefits they have earned.

So on this Fourth of July, let's remember: being an American means we fight for one another. We defend freedom, dignity, and the promise of opportunity for all, not just a privileged few.

And I'm not done fighting for you. God bless our troops and God Bless America.
