A note to all patriotic Americans fighting for a more just country.
Happy Independence Day!
249 years ago today, a group of revolutionary leaders gathered to adopt the Declaration of Independence, laying the foundation for a nation built on liberty, justice, and the promise of opportunity for all.
Today, we celebrate America’s independence from tyranny and all that makes our country great. Our people, and those who come here seeking their own American Dream. Our values, and those who work to uphold them in their lives and communities. Our freedom, and those who protect it.
We know, as those leaders did long ago, that patriotism doesn’t start and stop with waving a flag, but in taking action to advance our democratic ideals, defend our unalienable rights, and fulfill the promises made more than two centuries ago.
Loving America doesn’t just mean marching in a parade or enjoying a BBQ on the Fourth of July (although I certainly plan to). It means fighting for the best of what we can be — standing up for the vulnerable, defending our freedoms, and holding our institutions accountable when they fall short.
True patriotism belongs to all those who see America for the great, imperfect, and still ongoing project that it is, and actively work to be a part of its progress.
I’m proud to be an American, and I’m proud to work every day to make America a better and more just place for every single person who calls this country home.
