Two hundred and forty-nine years ago today, our nation’s founders formally adopted the Declaration of Independence – a document written, in part, by enslavers who didn’t recognize Black people as fully human.
So today, I’m reflecting on what freedom truly means.
If I’m honest, “freedom” is a complicated word for me.
That’s because, for millions of Americans, freedom isn’t a reality. It’s a promise that’s been broken again and again by politicians who prioritize billionaires over Black and brown communities, who choose war over peace, and who deny basic rights like healthcare, housing, and bodily autonomy.
The irony of July 4th? We’re still fighting for the freedom this country has claimed to stand for since 1776.
That’s why I’m fighting every day through Politivist Action PAC to elect leaders who will actually deliver justice, equality, and real freedom for all. Can you stand with us today? Chip in to help build the movement for a true, lasting freedom>>
Because freedom is more than a holiday. It’s a right worth fighting for.
In solidarity,
Cori Bush
