Dear John,

I hope you are having a restful and celebratory 4th of July.

As we celebrate our country’s independence, we must always look to our U.S. Constitution – which is now more vulnerable than ever.

Our sitting president has taken numerous actions in his less than 6 months in office that defy and disgrace our Constitution – invoking the Alien Enemies Act, threatening to take legal action against his political opponent, and ending birthright citizenship.

And just a few days ago, the far-right Justices on the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Donald Trump, giving him even more power to defy our Constitution — an immense threat to our democracy.

Donald Trump has and will continue to disregard and disrespect our Constitution and the ideals that our nation was built on.

“With the stroke of a pen, the President has made a ‘solemn mockery’ of our Constitution” – Justice Sonya Sotomayor

So we must continue to fight back, John, and I vow to continue protecting our democracy & advocating for Americans’ fundamental rights every day.

Today, we celebrate the independence of our country, our Constitution, and our democracy. And tomorrow we continue to fight to protect it.
