Here’s what I love about this country.

Happy Independence Day, John!

Today, I'm thinking about how much I love this country and what makes America so special to me.

I love that America is a place where a girl from Brookfield whose parents started out in a trailer park can grow up to serve as Lieutenant Governor. I love that we're a nation of neighbors who show up for each other — helping after disasters, volunteering at food banks, checking in on elderly neighbors.

I love that America is built on the idea that everyone deserves a fair shot. That's the America I've seen in my work as a nurse, in the Peace Corps, and right here in Wisconsin — people from all walks of life coming together to solve problems and lift each other up.

But I'd be lying if I said our values weren't under attack right now. Families are being torn apart by violent ICE raids. Rural hospitals are staring down potential closures because Trump wants to slash Medicaid funding. National Guard troops are being deployed against American citizens. This isn't the America I know and love.

Real patriotism means fighting for the values that make America worth celebrating, and right now, we need that more than ever — not just from our elected officials, but from everyday Americans who love our nation as much as I do.

So today, I'm celebrating the America where we don't give up on each other, but support and uplift each other. Where we honor our veterans, support our families, and make sure everyone has access to the care they need. Where we remember how we got here, what this country is truly about, and move forward together.

Happy Fourth of July, Wisconsin. And whether you’re joining a parade, barbecuing in the backyard, or spending time out on the water today — remember to stay safe!
