This July 4, we confront what’s been done in Trump’s second term – and commit to fighting for a freer, fairer, more democratic future.

People For the American Way.

Friend,

It’s July 4 – and it’s been 165 days since Donald Trump returned to the White House.

A day that’s meant to honor freedom and democracy now arrives at a time when both are under enormous threat from people claiming to defend them.

In just the first few months of his second term, Trump and his enablers in Congress have:

  • Accelerated immigration raids and mass detention, especially targeting asylum seekers and immigrant families
  • Gutted civil rights offices across the federal government, weakening protections in housing, education, and employment
  • Pushed national abortion restrictions, while rolling back enforcement of reproductive health care access
  • Rolled back LGBTQ+ protections, particularly targeting trans youth and narrowing anti-discrimination enforcement
  • Installed loyalists across agencies, undermining nonpartisan public service and oversight
  • And enabled all of it with the backing of a Supreme Court increasingly used as a tool of the Far Right

This is a government being used to punish critics, reward allies, and dismantle decades of progress all at the expense of the American people.

That’s why we’re asking you to take action – not just today, but for the long haul.

Let’s be clear: while the threats are real, so is the aspiration for something better.

We’ve lived through dark chapters before. And we’ve rewritten the future – not with easy victories, but through sustained resistance, moral clarity, and collective resolve.

As our co-founders, Norman Lear and former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, envisioned from the beginning, People For was built to defend freedom, expand rights, and hold this country to its highest ideals.

As Norman wrote on his 100th birthday:

"I often feel disheartened by the direction that our politics, courts and culture are taking. But I do not lose faith in our country or its future... Those encounters renew my belief that Americans will find ways to build solidarity on behalf of our values, our country and our fragile planet."

That belief – in solidarity, in persistence, in progress – is what guides us now.

That commitment – to turning ideals into action – was at the heart of Barbara Jordan’s vision, who said it best:

"What the people want is very simple – they want an America as good as its promise."

So do we.

Join us in building that America – start a monthly gift today >>

Thank you for being in this fight with us.
