Today is meant to be a celebration of freedom and democracy — but the truth is that we are at a perilous moment.

President Trump is abducting our immigrant neighbors and sending hundreds of them to prisons overseas, deploying the National Guard to suppress peaceful protests, and attacking anyone who attempts to challenge him.

Just a year ago, these actions might have seemed unimaginable — but now they’re escalating by the day. Academics, students, public officials, and activists have now been attacked and arrested for engaging in constitutionally protected speech. Some have been detained. Friend, history shows us that these very tactics are how democracies collapse into authoritarianism.

We cannot look away. This is the authoritarian playbook, and if left unchecked, the administration will continue to wield the power it is consolidating against anyone with whom they disagree. These attacks are unraveling the very freedoms we’re meant to be celebrating today. The future of our democracy depends on how we respond — and we must act now.

At NILC, we know that freedom means nothing if it’s not accessible to everyone. We are fighting in courtrooms, the halls of Congress, and in our communities to protect our rights and defeat the actions that threaten our democracy. But we can’t do it alone.
