Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Summer’s here, and so are some big changes that kicked in on July 1! One of the headline acts? A powerhouse public safety and judiciary law package I’m proud to have sponsored. It’s all about keeping our communities safer, making courts easier to navigate, and delivering justice more efficiently.

Here’s the scoop on what’s new—and why it matters to you:

*Stronger Protections for Our Firefighters*
Assaulting a firefighter now carries increased penalties. We’re making it crystal clear: those who put their lives on the line deserve every ounce of protection the law can give.

*More Time to Prosecute Arson*
The statute of limitations for first-degree arson has doubled from five to ten years, giving prosecutors a longer window to bring dangerous arsonists to justice.

*County Attorneys Get New Tools for Wage Theft Investigations*
To fight wage theft more effectively, county attorneys are now authorized to use administrative subpoenas. This helps get to the bottom of dishonest employer practices faster and protect workers’ hard-earned pay.

*Keeping Kids Safe from Fentanyl Exposure*
It’s now a crime to knowingly cause or permit a child to inhale, be exposed to, have contact with, or ingest fentanyl. This lifesaving law puts child safety front and center.

*Additional highlights include:*

*

Expanding crimes related to destruction of public utilities—think streetlights, EV chargers, traffic signals, and electronic signs.

*

Protecting correctional officers from “swatting” and fake crime reports.

*

Increasing civil court filing fees by $25 to fund services for crime victims.

*

Allowing police to use drones without warrants and to track stolen or fleeing vehicles with mobile devices—tools that help keep communities safe.

*

Tightening privacy rules around student directories and property records to protect Minnesotans’ personal information.

This law is a big win for public safety, justice, and protecting Minnesota families. I’m proud to fight for these commonsense policies to ensure our communities are safe and that our courts work fairly and efficiently for everyone.

Happy Independence Day!
1

As we come together to celebrate the Fourth of July, I want to take a moment to send warm wishes your way and reflect on what this day truly means.

Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, a group of brave men signed a declaration that changed the world. They stood up to tyranny and boldly declared that all people are created equal, endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That powerful idea has guided our country ever since, through times of trial and triumph alike.

Today, we honor not only the birth of our nation, but all those who have defended her—soldiers, veterans, first responders, and everyday Americans who serve in big and small ways to keep our communities strong and free. Their courage reminds us that freedom isn’t something we can take for granted—it’s something we must protect and pass on to the next generation.

Whether you’re attending a local parade, watching fireworks light up the night sky, or simply enjoying time with the people you love, I hope this holiday fills you with gratitude and pride for this land we call home.

Happy Independence Day. Let freedom ring!

Sincerely,

Representative Paul Novotny

Minnesota House of Representatives, District 30B
