As we enter July, and the Congress rushes to pass one of if not the most regressive bills in our country’s history, I am reminded how much what you do makes the work of fighting back possible. We will fight back in Congress and try to stop the recklessness and lawlessness in the White House, enabled and encouraged in the current Congress as we have seen this week. What we have also seen this week is that, to be able to do so, we must win the 2026 mid-term elections. And to that end, I want to thank all of you who answered the call to help us raise the funds we need and contributed in the second quarter of this year. I am so grateful to have you on this team. We need you.
A recent opinion piece in the New York Times , “How Awful Is the Republican Megabill? Here Are Four of the Worst Parts,” observes: “break through the deception and misdirection, and Republicans’ signature policy bill, which President Trump and G.O.P. lawmakers call the One Big Beautiful Bill, seems more aptly named Elites Over Working Families.”
And it’s true. This budget bill is awful for our community and for our country. There is so much in this nearly 1,000-page bill, but here are some key things to know:
* The bill will eliminate health care for an estimated 17 million people and will make premiums, deductibles, and copays soar for millions more. It cuts more than $1 trillion from health care, including the largest-ever cut to Medicaid, and will cause a $500 billion cut to Medicare, too. (It also “defunds” Planned Parenthood, cutting off essential, nonjudgmental reproductive health care for more than a million people across the country.)

* The bill contains the largest cut to nutritional assistance ever: an estimated 5 million people will lose food assistance (SNAP/food stamps) and tens of millions of kids will be at risk of losing school breakfast and lunch.

* The bill increases energy costs. Cuts to clean energy investments are estimated to increase the American families’ utility bills by an average of $400 per year. Seniors and low-income Americans will also have an even harder time getting assistance to pay their energy bills. These cuts are also expected to eliminate more than 840,000 jobs in just the next 5 years and an additional 790,000 jobs over the next 10 years.

* The bill adds $4 trillion to the debt, including $700 billion in interest payments on the debt, all for the purpose of making permanent tax cuts for the wealthy and well-connected. Estimates show that people making more than $1 million per year will have an average tax cut of $222 per day while people making $50,000 or less will get an average of 68 cents per day. And once you add in the cuts to health care and programs, people making under $50,000 per year will get less, the middle class will get nothing, and the top 1% will get the biggest benefit of all.
This bill is full of terrible policies. And these are difficult days. But they are not over. We are not done.
We have the opportunity to win back the House majority in 2026, and the obligation to do everything we can to make that happen. This week has made that clear.
We will continue fighting back—in the Congress, in the courts, and in our communities. We will share the contents of the reckless Republican budget—the big, ugly bill that President Trump has demanded—as we work to stop it in every way that we can. We will work to protect the programs it dismantles and the people it hurts.
But we can’t do all these things without you. We are all in this together. And that is why I am so very grateful to you for being in and staying in the fight. Today and every day.
Together, we can do anything,
