Dear John, you may have already heard the bad news: Yesterday, Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote for Donald Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.
This bill is NOT “big and beautiful” like Donald Trump and his cronies call it.
👎It is a bill that kicks millions off their healthcare by gutting over $800 billion from Medicaid, Medicare, and the Affordable Care Act.
👎It’s a bill that takes away funding for rural hospitals.
👎It’s a bill that slashes food aid for over 5.5 million Californians.
It’s a bill that makes life worse for so many everyday Americans while slashing taxes for oligarchs like Elon Musk. And the billionaire tax cuts are SO large that the cuts don’t pay for them all, which means billions of dollars added to our national debt.
While this bill is now going back to the House of Representatives, we are deeply appreciative of our California Strong Senators who fought tooth and nail against this travesty in the United States Senate.
Senator Adam Schiff spoke emotively about the impacts of this legislation on the Senate floor, saying:
“I think about the sacrifices of generations that went before, so that my generation could enjoy a better quality of life than my parents or their parents. This bill takes money from our kids and grandkids to pay for tax cuts for really wealthy people. I want nothing to do with that.”
Senator Alex Padilla also spoke out against the legislation.
Senate Republicans just voted to let President Trump and his billionaire allies rob working families blind in order to cut their own taxes by trillions of dollars.
But the fight isn't over yet.
While Republicans work to strip healthcare from millions and nutrition assistance from children, Democrats are united in doing everything we can to kill this bill as it moves through the House.
And Senator Padilla is right, John. We can still beat this bill.
That’s why we are working to turn the pressure up on swing district U.S. House Republicans here in California. They have a choice: serving their constituents, or the will of Donald Trump.
