Kicking off a Cleaner Summer in Fort Worth

Last month, Environmental Services kicked off summer with two major litter cleanups — the 2025 Lake Arlington Cleanup and the Meadowbrook Special Event Litter Cleanup.

cleanup

On Friday, June 13, the City of Fort Worth's Keep Fort Worth Beautiful team partnered with FIFA Dallas, the Trinity River Authority, the City of Arlington, and the University of Texas at Arlington to host the 2025 Lake Arlington Cleanup. This event signified the start to a series of collaborative efforts to promote sustainability and environmentalism, as the metroplex counts down to the 2026 FIFA World Cup's arrival to DFW, next year.

Teamwork was exemplified by all, as participants from each organization worked to remove litter from various locations surrounding Lake Arlington, including Eugene McCray Park and Wildcat Branch in Fort Worth. Approximately 4,900 pounds of litter were removed from the Fort Worth locations, contributing to the overall total of 6,040 pounds of litter removed.

On Saturday, June 14, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful hosted its third quarter Special Event Litter Cleanup at Normandy Place Park in the Meadowbrook Neighborhood. At this cleanup, 18 volunteers rolled up their sleeves, filling 36 bags of loose litter and removing 4,730 pounds of bulky debris and trash. In total, they collected and removed 5,450 pounds of litter from the Meadowbrook Neighborhood.

On behalf of the City of Fort Worth, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful would like to thank everyone for working together to make both events a huge success! We are grateful to everyone who took the time to help make our city - and our greater community - cleaner for everyone.

adopt a spot
Adopt-A-Spot Highlight: Fairmount Trash Pirates

Keep Fort Beautiful would like to shine the spotlight on our Adopt-A-Spot Program and one of its dedicated volunteer groups - the Fairmount Trash Pirates.

The Fairmount Trash Pirates maintain three Adopt-A-Spot locations, along Magnolia Avenue, Fire Station Park, and Fire Station Skate Park, and have been enthusiastically removing litter from their adopted locations since 2020. They have put in a grand total of 464 volunteer hours and removed 5,820 pounds of litter, so far. They also organize monthly cleanups and have taken the extra step to form a 501(c) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting cleanup efforts.

What is the Adopt-A-Spot program? Adopt-A-Spot is a volunteer program for individuals or groups who take take pride in their community. Adoptable areas include a variety of public spaces such as streets, parks, and medians. Once reserved, adopters take ownership of their spot by maintaining it through litter control efforts and cleanups. After certain program criteria are met, Keep Fort Worth Beautiful provides dedicated adopters with a custom sign proudly displaying the volunteer/group's name in their adopted area.

Heard the buzz? Mosquito season is here

Summer is here, and so are those pesky mosquitoes. Mosquitoes aren’t just annoying — they may also be dangerous to your health. West Nile virus, and other mosquito-borne diseases, can cause serious health complications. When it comes to mosquitoes, prevention is key to controlling the spread of disease.

Follow these preventive methods to stay safe this summer:

* *Dump standing water* by emptying out all outdoor containers, such as pools, planters, birdbaths, and trash containers.
* *Maintain gutters, rain barrels, and other water storage containers. *Keeping these items free from damage and tightly secured helps reduce water collection and keeps mosquitoes from laying eggs inside.
* *Apply insect repellent on your body and clothing any time you are outside*. Use insect repellent with one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon/eucalyptus, or other EPA-approved repellants.
* *Wear protective clothing*, such as long-sleeve shirts and long pants.
* *Regularly mow your lawn* to deter mosquitoes and reduce hiding spots.
* *Use screens on windows and doors*, and repair holes in the screens.

* Once the ash has cooled, soak the charcoal and ashes in water to prevent reignition.
* Using tongs, remove the cooled charcoal from the water and wrap it in aluminum foil.
* Place the foil-wrapped charcoal in your *brown garbage cart* for disposal.

Easy Ways to Conserve Water During the Summer

As temperatures rise, so does water use. Summer is the peak season for water demand, especially outside water use. Conserving water not only helps the environment, but it also reduces your utility bill and ensures resources are available during droughts.

Here are a few easy tips to help you save water this summer:

* *Water wisely:* Water your lawn early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation. Most lawns only need about one inch of water per week, including rainfall.
* *Check for leaks:* A small leak can waste hundreds of gallons. Inspect outdoor faucets, hoses, and sprinkler systems regularly, and fix any drips right away.
* *Use a broom, not a hose:* When cleaning driveways, patios, or sidewalks, sweep instead of spraying with water.
* *Install a rain barrel:* Collecting rainwater is a free and sustainable way to water plants and gardens.
* *Choose native or drought-tolerant plants:* These species need less water and are better adapted to local climate conditions.
* *Cover pools:* A pool cover can significantly reduce water loss from evaporation, especially on hot days.
* *Use mulch:* Mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps roots cool, reducing the need for frequent watering.

By adopting a few simple habits, you can enjoy your summer while using water more efficiently. Every drop saved helps your community and the planet.

Contribute to Clean Air this Summer

Summer is the season of the outdoors - attending open air events, biking, strolling in the park, and, of course, grilling up tasty meals for your friends and family. Before you start your adventures, it is important to remember that warmer temperatures can also bring hazier skies and higher risks of air pollution. * Enjoy outdoor activities or complete outdoor tasks earlier or later in the day, when air quality tends to be healthier.
* Use an electric, gas, or solar grill to reduce air pollution.
* Use propane or eco-friendly charcoal to decrease smoke.
* Combine errands, take public transport, bike, or carpool.
* Maintain your vehicle(s) to reduce emissions.
* Choose electric yard maintenance tools, like an electric lawn mower.

Composting Tips for Hot Summer Days

Although composting is highly beneficial in many ways, compost bins can start to smell bad and attract insects if not maintained regularly, especially during scorching hot summer days. It can make for an unpleasant trip when trying to transport your compostable items to one of the City's Food Waste Collection Sites.

Here are some tips to keep your summer compost bins odor and bug-free:

* Freeze your compostable items and add them to the bin when ready to transport them.
* Add coffee grounds or baking soda to absorb odors.
* Keep your bin out of direct sunlight, preferably in the fridge or freezer instead of the counter, if space allows.
* Set a trap by your compost bin for fruit flies and gnats.
* Aerate your compost bin by occasionally mixing the contents.
* Empty your bin at one of the Food Waste Collection Sites every _2-3 days_.
* Rinse your compost bin after every trip.

Remember, when participating in the COFW Residential Composting Program, only food waste is accepted. Napkins, plates, and bags – even those labeled as “compostable” – should not be placed in the collection bins. Happy composting and happy summer!
