John,
Early this morning, we earned a HUGE WIN: After uproar from across the country and across the political aisle, the Senate voted 99-1 to strike the AI moratorium from the budget bill. [1]
Issue One worked hard to defeat this provision and we couldn’t have done it without advocates like YOU who drove in calls to Congress urging them to reject the dangerous ban on AI and social media regulation.
If the provision was included in the bill, it would have axed every current and future state law that regulates artificial intelligence or social media algorithms for the next 10 years. Instead, senators voted in favor of protecting their constituents and against an action that would have torn down protections against child sexual abuse material, election deepfakes, data breaches, and more.
Over the next few days, the industry will try to push back against this victory. They will fill the halls of Congress and try to pad the pockets of every politician. But, they can’t deny the truth that we have the momentum and a nearly unanimous vote on our side. We’re keeping our eye on this and are ready to mobilize against efforts to get this reckless proposal back in the bill.
Thank you for joining Issue One in our efforts to defend democracy, protect children online, and hold Big Tech accountable for harms they’ve unleashed on the American people. Because of your help, communities across the country will be able to continue the work to protect themselves from AI and social media harms.
Thanks for all you do, The Issue One Team
