John -

A huge portion of the country is facing record-breaking heat waves this
week.^1

[ [link removed] ]AccuWeather: Heat wave to push temps near 100 F across central, eastern
US. A surging heat wave will be a shock for millions in the central and
eastern United States with the highest temperatures since last summer and
perhaps several years in terms of longevity and factoring in humidity.

The climate crisis is here, John — but we’re not powerless.
There’s one thing we can do right now to protect the most vulnerable in
our communities from extreme heat: We can tell Congress to ban utility
shutoffs during deadly heat waves.

It sounds unbelievable, but right now it’s perfectly legal for utility
companies in 27 states to shut off your power during the hottest days of
summer — leaving people without air conditioning in extreme temperatures,
threatening their health and safety.

Together, we can build the public pressure to stop these summer shutoffs.

heat waves today?

Utility companies are putting profits before people, and there are
life-or-death consequences. In the summer of 2023, an Arizona woman died
after her power was cut over a measly $51 debt.^2

These are the same companies that raise our rates to maximize their
profits while lobbying Congress and spreading misinformation to block the
transition to renewable energy.

We’ve had enough of private, for-profit utility companies spending our
money on fossil fuel energy that’s burning down our planet. Enough of
utilities shutting off our power in seconds if we’re late paying a bill —
even when it could kill us.

[ [link removed] ]If enough of us speak up, we can demand change. Join us today in
sending a letter to Congress calling on them to ban utility shutoffs
during dangerous heat waves nationwide!
