Hi Friend,

In the fight for justice, sometimes the most unexpected allies emerge from opposite ends of the spectrum. Today, I'm sharing a development that might surprise you—Animal Outlook stands in support of Project Veritas, a far right media organization, on a challenge to a law that threatens our ability to expose the truth about animal agriculture.

While Animal Outlook and Project Veritas couldn't be more different in most ways, we've found ourselves standing side-by-side in defense of a crucial tool for accountability: undercover investigations. Together with Mercy for Animals, DxE, and PETA, we've filed an amicus brief urging the US Supreme Court to hear Project Veritas's case—a challenge to an Oregon law, which, in many situations, makes it illegal to record audio inside farms, factories, and other facilities without permission.

This law would effectively silence the cries of animals suffering behind closed doors. As our former Executive Director Cheryl Leahy stated in the brief:

"One can certainly conceptualize the pain of an animal from a written description or silent video. But when one hears an animal's cries, the listener feels that pain in a completely different, and much more impactful, manner."

Cheryl's statement is backed up by scientific evidence, with MRI studies revealing that the same emotional centers in our brains activate when hearing animals in distress as when hearing humans in distress, and another study indicating that our bodies physically respond—with increased heart rates and perspiration—when we hear animals crying out in pain.

Our undercover investigations have been instrumental in exposing the truth about the animal agriculture industry. They've led to criminal charges, corporate policy changes, and increased public awareness. Without the ability to capture audio during these investigations, much of this impact would be lost.

We need the nation's highest court to weigh in on this case after a lower court ruled against the challengers. Similar laws in other states have been struck down as unconstitutional violations of free speech—and we're fighting to ensure Oregon's law meets the same fate.

This unusual alliance demonstrates something powerful: the fight for transparency transcends political boundaries. When the public can see and hear what happens to animals, change becomes possible.

Your support makes our legal advocacy possible. By donating today, you're helping continue this critical work to protect our right to expose the truth—not just for Animal Outlook, but for all organizations fighting for transparency and accountability.
