John – Earlier this week, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was arrested by ICE agents at an immigration court after escorting an immigrant out of court. During the exchange, Lander repeatedly asked agents to show a judicial warrant.

This comes after Thursday’s news that California Senator Alex Padilla was tackled, handcuffed and detained at Kristi Noem’s press conference.

Last week, New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver was also hit with federal charges after conducting a congressional oversight visit at an immigrant detention center in May, where agents attempted to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

This is becoming a worrying trend, where the Trump administration will use state force against anyone – even elected officials – who attempt to stand up to him and his cruel policies.

He is stoking resentment and fear among immigrants, and trying to scare off anyone who would come to their aid.

But we won’t be scared off, and we won’t be silent. The only way to combat this extremism is to continue to loudly fight back – and to lead with compassion and care.
