Hi John,
Israel’s new escalation of attacks on Iran has engulfed even more of the region in flames, killing more civilians and increasing the possibility of a wider regional conflict. And just as pressure was building on Israel, the massacres in Gaza are now receiving less media attention.

This is despite almost daily attacks on people trying to collect food aid. One attack on Tuesday killed at least 70 people queuing for flour. (1) It is hard to imagine the decisions that families in Gaza are facing now – to starve or to risk a violent death trying to access limited food items?

As UK government deploys more fighter jets to the region after Iran’s retaliatory strikes, and is reportedly considering supporting a possible US attack on Iran (2), we must show clearly that we the British public firmly reject this dangerous escalation.

At the same time, we must keep the pressure on for sanctions to hold Israel accountable, save lives in Gaza and build pressure to end the cycle of violence. Each time Israel is allowed to double down on violence with impunity, the UK helps lay the path for more destruction. (3)

Israel’s latest attacks came weeks after the UK suspended talks over a new trade agreement with Israel. This is a small step forward, but doesn’t go nearly far enough. It won’t put immediate material pressure on Israel, and the lack of decisive action appears to have emboldened them.

This is a crucial moment to keep the pressure on the government. Last week, 96 MPs and peers wrote to the UK government demanding the UK suspend its existing trade deal with Israel and ban trade with its illegal settlements on the West Bank. (4)

As Israeli bombing drives Palestinians into ever smaller pockets of Gaza and it threatens ever more violence, the UK government must use every lever to put pressure on Israel. That means a full and immediate arms embargo and trade sanctions to put pressure on Israel’s economy.

Under international law, all countries have an obligation to prevent genocide – we must demand our elected representatives do far more to stop Israel's barbaric attacks on Gaza. (5)
