Friend,
Today, we commemorate Juneteenth — the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Juneteenth is a day to celebrate the strength, culture, and contributions of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history. But it’s also a day for reflection. Because the struggle for true freedom and equality did not end in 1865 — and it hasn’t ended yet.
The legacy of slavery still persists in the form of systemic injustices that impact Black communities to this day. These range from racial disparities in healthcare and education to discriminatory barriers in housing, employment, and the justice system. And in recent years, we’ve seen renewed attacks on voting rights, education, and the telling of Black history itself.
So as we honor this day, let’s remember: Juneteenth is not just about the past — it’s about the promise of a better future. A future where every American has the freedom and opportunity to thrive. A future where our policies reflect our values.
I remain committed to that work — not just today, but every day. And I’m grateful to stand alongside so many of you in the ongoing pursuit of justice and equity for all.
Happy Juneteenth,
Lori Trahan
