Fellow Democrat,
For me, Juneteenth is the most patriotic celebration of our Nation. While the 4th of July celebrates the birth of the nation, Juneteenth celebrates the Nation living up to the aspirations of the Declaration of Independence and the promises of our Constitution. Juneteenth is a reminder that laws, without affirmative enforcement and without an eye towards liberation, are simply pieces of paper.
Juneteenth, like Memorial Day, are reminders that the Black American struggle for freedom is the American struggle for freedom. Juneteenth holds up a mirror to the Nation and asks simply, “Are we free?”
Are we free from economic exploitation? Are we free to love? Are we free to breathe? Are we free from violence?
I can only imagine the sense of shock, surprise, joy, anger, and fear those former slaves felt in Galveston TX, when they learned they were lied to and kept in bondage. I often wonder about the impact on the Union soldiers who relayed the message.
As a Black woman, policy maker, and military service member, I am forever aware of the freedoms I have that my own mother didn’t have, let alone my slave ancestors. It is in their honor that I celebrate Juneteenth with a recommitment to be a freedom fighter for not just my own community but for all communities that make up this diverse tapestry of America.
This Juneteenth, let us all commit to that work. Whether it’s pushing for policies that remove barriers to quality education, working towards fair, resilient housing, expanding transportation access, or investing in underserved communities, we must ensure that the promise of freedom is available for all.
In closing, I would also like to address the current political climate. Let me be clear, what we are facing as a nation is atrocious, cruel, and racist. However, I draw inspiration from the Black Americans who have struggled for freedom since the founding of this Nation under much worse conditions. I hope that you will commit to drawing inspiration, studying the history, and saying their names. There is a reason why the federal administration is attacking education and history lessons. They know if we study how powerful we have been, the shoulders we stand on, and the multi-racial coalitions that have existed since the beginning of this Nation, we will never be slaves again.
Sincerely,
Lydia Edwards
