Dear John,
If you’ve kept up with our emails, you may have already heard of HB 2977 [[link removed]] : a bill that would provide critical funding to address Oregon’s biodiversity crisis and to protect and recover the native wildlife and habitats that make Oregon so special. I’m reaching out today to provide an exciting update that HB 2977 has just advanced from the House Committee on Revenue and will soon be up for a vote in the full House of Representatives. With Oregon losing biodiversity at an alarming rate and wildlife conservation woefully underfunded for decades, HB 2977 would establish ongoing and unprecedented state funding for wildlife conservation. This monumental opportunity cannot be overstated, as dependable ongoing funding will benefit wildlife and Oregonians for generations. Will you take action for Oregon’s wildlife today? We know how much Oregonians value our wildlife, as well as our tourists. The objective of HB 2977 is to increase funding for wildlife and habitat conservation ( read more [[link removed]] ). After much negotiation to garner broad support from diverse parties, the base bill was amended to significantly increase the overall funding for wildlife conservation priorities generated through an increase in the statewide transient lodging tax.
This bill, with the newly added amendment, would be a historic win for wildlife conservation, saving many of Oregon’s native species from the brink of extinction, and providing a new ongoing revenue stream for many wildlife programs. In particular, the amendment added funding for several of our wildlife priorities this session, including a Wildlife Stewardship Program, wildlife crossings and habitat connectivity, invasive species response, and programs to combat illegal poaching of wildlife. It would also allow ODFW to hire a full-time wolf coexistence biologist to increase knowledge and reduce conflict in interspecies relationships. In addition, the bill would enable the state to invest in conservation of numerous wildlife species and urgent needs that have previously been overlooked.
Oregon’s wildlife deserve more. If we don’t protect them now by passing HB 2977, modernizing our manner and scale of wildlife conservation funding, we will continue to lose many of Oregon’s special native species that make our beloved state what it is. Now is our time to change the conversation and prioritize wildlife conservation for good. Please show your lawmakers that you support this bill and Oregon’s native wildlife! [[link removed]]
