The Boundary Waters are such a special place.

Far from the hustle and bustle of the city, you'll find more than a thousand crystal-clear lakes in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.[1] As you breathe in the clean air, you'll hear only silence, except for the occasional chatter of songbirds or the loon's haunting cry.

But if you could see beneath the surface of the Boundary Waters, you'd find something else altogether: reserves of copper, nickel and other metals, which many mining companies are eager to exploit.[2]

If we want this pristine wilderness to remain clean and pure, we can't allow toxic mining to threaten it. Fortunately, there is a bill that would protect the Boundary Waters from mining forever.

For years, the Twin Metals mining company has been planning to build a copper mine next door to the Boundary Waters wilderness. Currently, such a project is temporarily forbidden because upstream copper mining could pollute the pristine lands and glassy waters. But that could change.[3]

The best way to protect the Boundary Waters from copper mining is to pass a law enshrining the wilderness' protections forever. If we pass the law, we can preserve the Boundary Waters for generations to come.

After all, which is more important? Extracting more copper for more electronics and other modern gadgets? Or preserving a place where wildlife can roam free and people can escape the fast-paced world of screens and tall buildings?

There aren't many places like this left in the world. Losing the Boundary Waters would leave our world a less wild and beautiful place. It's up to us to save them.
