John,

The National Wildlife Federation is thrilled to share the great news of the birth of four new bison calves to the Boy-zshan Bi-Den (Buffalo Return) Program of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Now, the Eastern Shoshone are inviting you to help to name one of them!

This small calf represents big hope for the future of its species. Please submit the name that you think best fits this emblematic animal of the Great Plains.

Just four years ago, the Eastern Shoshone Tribe and the National Wildlife Federation introduced buffalo back to the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming after an absence of over 130 years. Since then, the herd has welcomed over fifteen calves—reflecting tremendous progress for tribal bison restoration efforts.

It’s remarkable that 30 million bison once roamed the continent in vast herds, stretching as far as the eye could see. Sadly, decades of overexploitation, habitat loss, and human conflict stripped most free-ranging bison from their natural grassland habitat.

Thanks in part to the generosity of friends like you, the National Wildlife Federation and tribal partners are leading efforts to relocate wild bison and return them to their native habitats — where they belong. This calf is a result of that successful work.

Please help us name this special calf by June 24th.

Our partners from the Eastern Shoshone Tribe will narrow down your submissions to the final 3 names. And they will then ask you, our wildlife community, to vote on the final choice.

Let’s honor the species with an indelible footprint on our American conservation conscience, for Native Americans and all Americans, and help us bring bison restoration to the forefront of the conservation conversation.

Sincerely,

The National Wildlife Federation Membership Team
