This expansion will connect neighborhoods in South Mountain with downtown, and the entire light rail system with eight new stations, a new park-and-ride facility, and a transit hub that converges in downtown Phoenix.
In addition to the light rail expansion, we’ve upgraded bike lanes, pedestrian pathways, desert-adapted landscaping, and art projects along the extension.
Mayor Kate Gallego has been instrumental in bringing this major infrastructure project to fruition. As a councilwoman, she chaired the Transportation 2050 plan, which included this project. And after she was elected Mayor in 2019, one of her first successes was defeating the repeal of this light rail expansion.
The new South Central light rail expansion will help connect more of our communities together and give residents the opportunity to let someone else do the driving.
Mayor Kate Gallego is thrilled to see this progress for our city and will continue to build on it. She is determined to make Phoenix the city of the future, and we’d love your support to help make that happen.
