University Leaders. Next in line to be

questioned about campus antisemitism by a House committee are the leaders of Georgetown University, University of California, Berkeley and the City University of New York. They will appear on July 9 before the House Education and Workforce Committee, which indicated that topics of interest will include antisemitic student groups and foreign funding. Since being invited to the hearings, each university has put out a statement condemning antisemitism and in support of Jewish students.

Georgetown, for example, noted that interim president Robert Groves looks forward to discussing the school’s programming to prevent antisemitism, adding that “as a Catholic and Jesuit University, Georgetown condemns antisemitism and all forms of hatred.”

CUNY. Arthur Cheliotes, board chairman of CUNY’s School of Labor and Urban Studies, has

resigned following backlash over posts endorsing anti-Israel conspiracy theories and antisemitic rhetoric. Cheliotes reposted a graphic accusing the Israeli government of facilitating the 10/7 Hamas attacks and comparing Prime Minister Netanyahu to Hitler. In response, CUNY Chancellor Felix Matos Rodriguez condemned the remarks, calling them “dangerous antisemitic conspiracies that have no place in CUNY or anywhere else,” and urged Cheliotes to step down. Though Cheliotes led an independent affiliated board, the controversy intensified scrutiny on CUNY’s climate after a year of protests, faculty controversies and arrests at demonstrations across its campuses.

Columbia. Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia student detained in Louisiana since March, may soon be released after a federal judge ruled his detention unconstitutional. Khalil had been held under a 1952 immigration law due to public statements on Israel, which Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed threatened U.S. foreign policy.

Khalil’s lawyers are now demanding that he must be released immediately after the Trump administration missed a Friday morning deadline to appeal a judge’s order halting his detention and deportation. Federal Judge Michael Farbiarz found the detention unconstitutional, citing irreparable harm to Khalil’s reputation and free speech. Despite the court order, ICE has provided no timeline for his release, prompting urgent calls from Khalil’s legal team.

Propaganda Watch. Pro-Hamas student groups have condemned

Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, framing them as unjust acts of U.S./Zionist aggression. Groups like Columbia University Apartheid Divest and SJP blamed Israel and the U.S. for regional instability — echoing past rhetoric after the 10/7 attacks. A new report from the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Antisemitism details how these groups use social media to spread radical anti-Zionist and antisemitic messages, fueling a hostile climate for Jewish students.

Escalation Between Israel, Iranian Regime Sparks Vicious Antisemitic, Anti-Israel Rhetoric Online

Australia. A class action lawsuit has been filed against the University of Sydney and two professors over alleged antisemitic conduct following the 10/7 attacks.

The suit accuses Dr. Nick Riemer and Professor John Keane of spreading harmful rhetoric that contributed to an unsafe campus climate for Jewish students and staff. It follows the university’s decision to suspend another academic, Fahad Ali, after he posted that “Zionists should be executed.” Additional faculty have also faced scrutiny for inflammatory posts, though many were not formally disciplined. The case, brought by students and staff, argues that universities must draw a line between free speech and hate speech. It follows an apology last year from Vice Chancellor Mark Scott, who admitted the university had “failed” its Jewish community during months of
protests and unrest.

everything that happens in Israel,” says Rabbi Ari Berman, the President of Yeshiva University. He noted that over 80 percent of YU students study in Israel and that the conflicts Israel is engaged in have not deterred that enthusiasm. He made clear that at this time of missiles from Iran, the school is taking every measure to ensure the safety and support of its students in Israel. “We want to make sure that our students are safe while continuing to be engaged.”

Building Jewish Life. Brandeis University and Hillel at Brandeis announced a transformative

$25 million partnership to create a new, state-of-the-art Center for Jewish Life in the heart of campus. The 28,000-square-foot transformation of historic Kutz Hall will give Hillel a modernized home — complete with gathering spaces, a Beit Midrash, student lounges, a cafe, and areas for Shabbat and holiday celebrations. Designed with input from students, faculty and alumni, the center reflects Brandeis’ commitment to Jewish life and values. “This is a milestone moment for us,” said Interim President Arthur Levine. “The new Hillel building is critical to our advancement as a university rooted in Jewish values and committed to community and excellence.”
