Dear Friend,
Today is Father’s Day, and that reminded us of a story.
At a rally during the election, someone shouted at Mark Carney, “Lead us, Big Daddy!”
It got a laugh. But it also captured something real.
In a world that feels less safe than it did even a week ago, it’s tempting to hand over control. To trust that someone will take care of it. Make the hard calls. Lead from the top down.
But in Parliament, the Liberals are taking that "Big Daddy Energy" too far.
Bill C-5 is a massive omnibus bill that would give Cabinet sweeping powers to fast-track megaprojects. It would sidestep environmental protections and bypass consultation with Indigenous Nations. And the government is rushing it through Parliament in just five days, eliminating committee study, ignoring public input, and shutting down meaningful debate.
Legal experts and Indigenous leaders are sounding the alarm. They’ve seen what happens when power moves too fast and listens too little.
This isn’t just about process. It’s about power without limits, policy without scrutiny, and promises without accountability.
Parliamentary committees are where legislation is tested and improved. It’s where Indigenous leaders, environmental experts, and community advocates have the greatest ability to shape outcomes. It’s where MPs from all parties can propose amendments that strengthen the laws that govern us. When that process is diminished, democracy is diminished.
Father’s Day reminds us there is another kind of leadership. The kind that listens before it acts. The kind that protects people and principles. The kind that builds trust through transparency—not force.
That is the leadership Canadians deserve. Many expected that from Mr. Carney. But so far, this government’s actions are not living up to those hopes.
Will you donate today to help us push back and defend democracy from the inside out?
