Now, why would Republicans and Trump — that guy who ran on promises he’d lower costs “on Day One” — want to get rid of the CFPB, the agency that helps lower costs for Americans?
It could be because of the CFPB’s track record:
- Putting around $20 billion back in the pockets of people who got cheated by financial institutions
- Taking on the types of shady lenders that were tricking and trapping people with complicated mortgages and eventually crashed our economy in 2008 — costing millions of people their homes
- Stopping Wells Fargo from unlawfully repossessing people’s cars after the bank had piled on fees that consumers didn’t owe or charged them the wrong interest rate
- Tackling aggressive junk fees that make price comparisons impossible
- Beating back predators that tricked service members and veterans into paying interest rates that surged up to 200 percent on pawn loans
- Pushing back when some medical debt collector companies were double billing patients or even charging patients for services they never received
Put simply: If you’ve got a checking account, a credit card, a mortgage, or a student loan — the CFPB is looking out for you to keep you from getting cheated by corporations. And corporate billionaires aren’t happy about that.
Dismantling the CFPB is a craven way for Republicans to reward their rich and powerful friends who profit off of cheating consumers. It’s a way for them to get rid of the cop on the beat who could stand in the way of their own financial interests. And it’s a way for them to make it easier for Big Banks and corporate CEOs to trick, trap, and scam you.
I’m exposing Republicans’ blatant attempts to shut down our consumer watchdog agency. This agency has been attacked left and right, but our fight to get our government on the side of the working class can prevail — and I’ll keep fighting my heart out to make sure that we win.
If you’re in a position to give, chip in to fund our fight to protect working Americans from getting tricked, trapped, or scammed by billionaires and corporations. Your donation fuels my fight to stop this Big Ugly Bill and raise the alarm about the attacks on working people coming from the White House and Republicans.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
