The House of Representatives voted Tuesday to scrap a Washington, DC, law permitting noncitizens to vote in local elections and overturn another local law curtailing law enforcement liability protections. In a 266 to 148 vote with one present, the House moved to nix the 2022 Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act and ensure that only US citizens can vote in DC elections...Another bill, titled the 'Protecting Our Nation’s Capital Emergency Act,' introduced by Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), also cleared the lower chamber in a 235-178 vote with one lawmaker voting present. 'The Metropolitan Police Department is facing a public safety crisis brought on by reckless policies that have stripped officers of basic protections and left the force dangerously understaffed,' Garbarino said in a statement. 'This legislation helps right that wrong by giving MPD the tools and support they need to recruit, retain, and protect. Congress has a duty to ensure our nation’s capital is safe.' The DC Police Union, which includes some 3,000 members, had endorsed the bill that rolls back DC’s Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022, which limited Metropolitan Police Department officers’ ability to collectively negotiate disciplinary actions. Garbarino’s measure also restores a statute of limitations on claims against DC police.

Santapogue Elementary School in West Babylon held its inaugural Flag Day celebration this week, hosted by the school’s Student Council. In honor of the occasion, Andrew provided an American flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to mark the event. The ceremony offered a brief but meaningful opportunity for students and staff to reflect on the significance of the American flag and the values it represents.

This week, the Bellport Chamber of Commerce hosted a breakfast at the Bellport Community Center to bring together local businesses and neighboring chambers for networking and collaboration. Andrew continues to support small businesses across NY-02 and appreciates the vital role chambers play in strengthening our local economy and fostering community connections.

On Monday afternoon, Andrew’s office was contacted by a constituent—a veteran in poor health—who had been waiting over nine days for a priority mail package containing his daily medication. The package had been mailed from Florida to New York and was well past its expected delivery date. Andrew’s casework team immediately reached out to USPS regarding the delay. By Tuesday afternoon, the package was delivered, and the constituent confirmed receipt. He expressed his deep appreciation for the assistance, noting how critical the medication was to his health.

This week, Andrew chaired a Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection hearing focused on securing artificial intelligence to strengthen U.S. cybersecurity. Andrew questioned private sector experts on topics including Secure by Design principles, emphasizing the need for strong standards as AI becomes more deeply embedded in critical systems. As adversaries continue to weaponize this technology, ensuring AI is built and deployed securely is essential to protecting U.S. infrastructure and staying ahead of emerging threats. This week, Andrew voted for the HALT Fentanyl Act to help law enforcement stop the flow of deadly fentanyl into communities in NY-02 and across the country. The fentanyl crisis is taking lives at an alarming rate, and stronger tools are urgently needed to confront it head-on. The legislation will permanently schedule fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I drugs and strengthen efforts to crack down on drug traffickers. Every single life lost to fentanyl is more than just a statistic—and this bill is a critical step toward saving lives and securing our borders. The HALT Fentanyl Act now heads to the President’s desk for his signature.
