From one major showdown to the next.
Earlier this year, this team helped secure victories in two critical state supreme court races, electing strong Democracy Defenders in Wisconsin and North Carolina. It might feel like these races just ended, but the truth is, we’re already gearing up for what’s next in these battleground states.
State supreme courts play an outsized role in protecting voting rights, fair maps, abortion rights, and other critical issues. With increased attacks on our democracy nationwide, the outcome of these races will have serious implications across the country.
In a moment, we’ll explain more about what’s at stake in these races. But right now, we’re asking you to make a donation to power our work for fair maps in statewide elections in 2025, 2026, and beyond. [[link removed]]

Let’s dive into why these races are on our priority list.
North Carolina is fresh in our minds after Republicans spent six months trying to steal the last supreme court election. Rather than concede after multiple recounts, the Republican candidate sued to try and overturn a free and fair election. It took too long, but Justice Allison Riggs is now rightfully in her seat on the court.
As we look ahead to next year’s race, it’s hard to ignore what’s at stake. A conservative challenger who’s also the architect behind the state's 12-week abortion ban, has pledged to be a “conservative voice” on the bench. Since statewide elections in North Carolina are almost always won in the margins, we can expect this to come down to the wire. And Republicans seem willing to do anything to win.
Wisconsin’s own supreme court race became a fixture in the news cycle this year when Elon Musk spent nearly $25 million trying to elect the Trump-endorsed candidate. Thankfully, grassroots efforts, including ours, were enough to overcome the world’s richest man putting his thumb on the scale.
But it’s clearer than ever: We need to be prepared to hold our own against whatever they throw our way in 2026. Winning this seat would expand our pro-democracy majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court — and prevent conservatives from gaining a path back to the majority in 2028.
Wisconsin and North Carolina are just two of the battlegrounds where the fight for fair maps and fair representation is happening right now. We’re also gearing up for a big state supreme court race this fall in another key battleground in Pennsylvania, where Republicans have plans to spend seven figures to try to win a seat.
We know it takes real grassroots support to win these critical state-level elections — and we’re counting on supporters like you more than ever!
