John,
Today is a dark and sad day. A few hours ago, we learned of the assassination of Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, and the attempted assassination of Minnesota State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman.
The investigation is ongoing, but early reports suggest that the suspect had a list of intended targets, including other lawmakers, abortion providers, and abortion rights advocates.
Every day, we work with leaders seeking public office to try to build more loving, safe, and sustainable communities. Some are already elected officials, and others serve their communities as advocates, healthcare providers, and educators.
These leaders are parents, neighbors, and friends. They work to solve problems like how to make sure everyone has access to comprehensive healthcare, how to give our children every opportunity regardless of income or geography, and how we can empower our families with autonomy and freedom.
Our democracy protects systems to voice dissent, including town halls, protests, and elections. Political violence is completely unacceptable and makes all of us less safe.
Today, we’re holding Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark in our thoughts, and we’re wishing Sen. Hoffman and his wife Yvette a full recovery. Our hearts are with all who are mourning today.
We remain enormously grateful for the brave community leaders working to create a safer, more peaceful world for our families.
In solidarity,
Sara Tabatabaie
