National Guard to Los Angeles to suppress peaceful protestors in defiance
of the governor of California and a federal judge.^1
Then on Thursday, we watched federal agents tackle and handcuff a U.S.
Senator after he dared to ask Trump's Homeland Security Secretary a
question at a news conference.^2 And today, we have the grotesque
spectacle of a $45 million authoritarian military parade in Washington,
D.C., on Donald Trump's birthday.^3
Donald Trump is building a police state right before our eyes — and we're
fighting back.

The one part of government that has effectively stood in the way of
Trump's authoritarian takeover is the federal judiciary.^4
So Trump and his MAGA allies in Congress have launched an all-out war on
judges so that there will be no constitutional checks and balances to
stand in his way.
In March, the House of Representatives passed the No Rogue Rulings Act,
which would strip federal judges of the power to block Trump's most
illegal actions from going into effect.^5
Then Republicans in Congress snuck a one-sentence provision into the
so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" that would strip federal judges of
the power to hold Trump administration officials in contempt when they
defy court orders.^6
Together, these two laws would cripple the federal judiciary as a
meaningful check on Trump's power.
But in America, we don't do kings. So Demand Progress has mobilized tens
of thousands of people to speak out against Trump's assault on the
judiciary, and now we must ramp up our efforts.
