Team — You may have missed this in all of the breaking news this week.
David Huerta, president of the California chapter of the SEIU labor union, has been arrested by ICE. He is being charged with conspiracy to impede an officer — a felony — after participating in a nonviolent protest against ICE raids in Los Angeles.
Add your name to my petition today and join me in demanding that these charges be dropped.
David Huerta is a respected labor leader and a pillar of working class communities in California. His participation in protests demonstrate how a majority of Americans feel betrayed by this immigration crackdown.
That’s because during his presidential campaign, Trump promised to go after “criminals”. The worst of the worst. It was a lie.
Now that he’s in power, he’s fully empowered ICE to act like thugs, separating families, raiding workplaces, terrorizing communities, and suspending bedrock protections like due process.
Huerta’s arrest is nothing more than the latest authoritarian tactic by Trump’s immigration regime.
Let’s not forget that this administration is bringing similar charges against a Democratic member of Congress for also protesting ICE. And last week we saw an extraordinary escalation when Trump called the national guard into Los Angeles.
We have to fight back.
Labor leaders like David Huerta understand the power of collective action, which is why I’m asking you to join me today in demanding that the charges against him and other nonviolent protesters be dropped.
I appreciate you adding your much-needed voice today.
In solidarity,
Ed Markey
