Weekend Reading

Hi Friend,
Thanks to everyone who contacted Congress to stop funding cruelty against immigrants [link removed] ! Immigrants make our communities stronger. But right now, the Trump administration is detaining and deporting our community members. It is also trying to crush peaceful protests against brutal ICE raids. Today, we must keep up our efforts to build a more just, peaceful world where all people are welcome with dignity.

In Florida, AFSC staff and volunteers remind us what that world could look like. Every week, rain or shine, they set up a support table across from the Miramar ICE facility. They provide water, snacks, and resources for immigrants. And they offer dignity, support, and compassion to those navigating some of the hardest times in their lives. AFSC STATEMENT

No war on Iran [link removed]

Yesterday, Israel launched airstrikes against Iran, targeting locations across the country. Israel’s unilateral attack represents a significant escalation, threatening regional and global security. In the last week alone, Israel has continued its genocidal campaign in Gaza, bombed Yemen and Syria, and relentlessly attacked Lebanon in violation of the ceasefire agreement. The U.S. and the international community must make every effort to stop Israel’s violence and expansionist agenda in the region. Read the full statement. [link removed]

Opinion: The Immigrant Trust Act would protect all of us [link removed]
By Steven Sacco

It's not just people with precarious immigration statuses who are being detained by ICE. U.S. citizens are also in danger of deportation. That was revealed in a recent public records request of the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office in New Jersey. That Sheriff's office offered up a number of U.S. citizens in its custody to ICE and each one had a Latinx name--a sign of aggressive racial profiling. That’s why New Jersey lawmakers must pass the Immigrant Trust Act. The law would protect all residents by limiting cooperation between local law enforcement and ICE. (NorthJersey.com)

Responding to ICE arrests at courthouses [link removed]

In Denver and cities across the U.S., ICE is detaining immigrants outside of their court hearings. In response, AFSC started a court watch in Denver, stationing volunteers at the federal courthouse throughout the day. The effort came in response to ICE detaining people outside of their court hearings. AFSC will continue to document these cases. We are also working to orient detained individuals and their loved ones to know their rights and what to expect. (Denver Post)
