Instagram Teen Accounts Put to the Test: Promises vs. Reality
“It was truly some of the most horrific and heartbreaking experiences I’ve experienced while on a social media app. I was surprised that this account was meant to be a Teen Account.” ~Study participant, testing Instagram Teen Accounts For over a decade, child safety organizations have been calling for Big Tech organizations, like Instagram and Facebook, to create defaulted safety settings for minors on their apps. The idea behind this was to create a version of the app with built-in protective features that would reduce the risk of exposure to sensitive and sexual content, grooming, and even sex trafficking.
This past September Meta announced “Instagram Teen Accounts” that supposedly did just that. Parents and child advocates rejoiced, thinking their pleas had finally been heard.
Recently, an organization called Accountable Tech decided to put Instagram Teen Accounts to the test. They partnered with five young adults from an organization called Design It For Me to create five fake Instagram Teen Accounts and determine the integrity of Meta’s promises.

National Review: Pornhub Exits France to Protest Age Verification Law Pornhub will no longer operate in France for refusing to comply with a law that requires pornography websites to verify the age of their users before allowing them access to the site.
France is Aylo's (parent company of Pornhub) second-largest market after the United States. Benjamin Bull, general counsel at the NCOSE Law Center was featured in a article from the National Review regarding this news. He said that aside from not wanting to comply with age verification laws, there could be another reason Aylo has decided to exit France: “Through the use of cookies, IP Address, browser fingerprinting, tracking pixels, account tracking, and other tools, Pornhub knows who is viewing their site, down to your name, proximate age, sex, location, and viewing preferences.
They leverage this information through advertising and targeting. They don’t want to destroy this information as required by the state age verification laws, so they pull out of the state.” |
