Hi friend,
I know this has been an incredibly challenging and concerning week. So before I dive into this week’s Patriot Weekly update, I want to be clear that I am using my voice in every way possible to hold Trump’s feet to the fire – on social platforms, in interviews, and in committee hearings – including just yesterday where I had the chance to question Pete Hegseth and demand answers on the politicization of our military and tell him to his face he should resign. In this week’s edition of the Patriot Weekly, I want to tell you about the new House Democratic Veterans Caucus I just formed with colleagues, as well as highlight the work being done on behalf of kids right here in the Hudson Valley, and my stint as a (not so professional) baseball player for the Congressional Baseball Game.

[link removed] [[link removed]] What I’m doing: This week, I wanted to highlight some of the incredible work being done by the Day One Learning Community in Poughkeepsie. As a dad, I know how important it is to invest in our kids' full potential and give them the support they need to grow into who they are. Day One is a nonprofit organization that keeps that mission central to its values and works to provide quality childcare for every kid, as well as invest in teachers and families to create strong communities where children thrive. Their model of supporting teachers and students has garnered a lot of attention. First Lady Jill Biden even visited the center in 2023 to highlight their work. [link removed] [[link removed]] What I’m doing: This week, I was proud to represent the Hudson Valley in the Congressional Baseball Game, a time-honored tradition that raises money for charity. I wasn’t playing in Yankee Stadium, but I still had to show off my New York pride by rocking a Hudson Valley Renegades cap and a West Point Army jersey, of course with the number 18 for NY-18. This year, we raised almost $3 million for charities like the Boys and Girls Club & the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund. [link removed] [[link removed]]
What you can do: This is a tradition that goes back more than 100 years, so if you didn’t get the chance to attend this year, then I hope you can make it next summer – where we can hopefully pull off a win for the Democrats! What I’m doing: Over the last six months, we have seen egregious attacks on our veterans by the Trump administration – closing VA offices, firing thousands of VA staff with more on the way, marking it harder for vets to access the health care and benefits they earned, and so much more. I joined forces with other veterans in the House to form a new House Democratic Veterans Caucus, because I refuse to let our draft-dodging President lecture us about what it means to be a Patriot while he cuts veterans’ health care, insults Gold Star families, and installs an incompetent loyalist who is dangerously politicizing the Department of Defense. What you can do: This caucus is going to be one vehicle for holding Trump accountable for his attacks on veterans, but what we need right now is a lot of voices coming together and demanding that this administration stands with our servicemembers. I would encourage you to use every platform available to you – whether it’s in your community, or calling your representative, or posting on social media – to draw attention to these attacks and the work elected leaders like myself and other members of this caucus are doing to stand with veterans.
Going on offense
[link removed] [[link removed]] Over the course of the administration, I have continued to bang the drum on what Democrats can be doing to win back the trust of the American people. We need to be a party that FIGHTS and stands up for freedom and democracy in the face of all the chaos and division. As we see what’s playing out in Washington, how the president continues to betray veterans while using the military for his own political purposes, it’s more clear to me than ever that we need to reclaim what it means to be patriotic and stand up for the flag.Patriotism isn’t about allegiance to a political party or fealty to a political leader.
The flag – and the values it stands for – belongs to every American.
Keep the faith, keep up the fight, and thank you for reading!
In Solidarity,
Pat
