Join a No Kings rally this Saturday

This Saturday all CFT members are encouraged to join our neighbors, students, and communities at any of the hundreds of No Kings events across the state. The peaceful, non-violent mobilizations are our opportunity to loudly and visibly push back against the increasingly authoritarian actions of the Trump administration.

CFT will be prioritizing two large rallies tomorrow. At the first rally in downtown Los Angeles (RSVP), we will gather at 10:00 a.m. at Los Angeles City Hall. At the second rally in San Francisco (RSVP), we will gather at 11:30 a.m. at Dolores Park. If you cannot make one of these two events, you can find a rally near you at www.nokings.org.

This past week, the Trump administration has been terrorizing our immigrant communities, specifically targeting hard-working people who are just trying to earn a living. In an attempt to quell dissent, the administration arrested labor leader David Huerta last Friday after a mass raid by ICE in the garment district of L.A., as he attempted to speak out to protect his members and our communities. This week the Trump administration also illegally deployed the National Guard, in an unprecedented move that usurps the power of California’s governor. And just yesterday after Senator Padilla attempted to get answers at a Department of Homeland Security news conference, he was roughed up and detained.

All of these moves are part of a broader pattern of escalating and increasingly provocative actions and rhetoric by the president, intended to hurt our communities, divide our country, and distract attention from his attempt to gut Medicaid and give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy. Actions he is taking as he progresses towards an authoritarian government. But Californians are rising up in huge numbers to say enough is enough. See you on Saturday!

Stop the state from raiding critical HVAC funds for schools!

We need your support!

The state of California is about to raid a $194 million fund set aside to fund critical HVAC and plumbing improvements in our public schools to give massive utility refunds to private corporations. Please take a moment to write to Governor Newsom and our state budget leaders and let them know that this is absolutely unacceptable.

In his current state budget proposal, Governor Newsom has proposed to immediately eliminate the CalSHAPE program, which funds the HVAC and plumbing upgrades. The cuts would impact thousands of California schools at a time when our temperatures are about to soar and we enter fire season. We need updated HVAC systems in our schools, not corporate refunds. Please, sign on to the letter here.

CFT celebrates Juneteenth

Next Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19 that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.

In 2021 President Biden signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a new federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery. Today Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom and achievement, while encouraging continuous self-development and respect for all cultures.

There are celebrations all over California this weekend and throughout next week. For more information and resources, check out the Juneteenth page on the CFT website.
